Youth Congress’s magazine slammed for creating an elitist meme against PM Modi

The official twitter handle of the Congress party has always managed to goof up or generate controversy in one way or another.

Some of the instances include getting lampooned for posting silly multiple choice options in its #KnowYourLegacy twitter quiz, which attempted to glorify various aspects of the Gandhi family and the political party. This hashtag later came back to haunt the party as it started getting used by twitter users to post sarcastic questions attacking the party.

Apart from promoting unintended banter, the twitter handle was also caught red-handed while trying to spread half-truths and whole lies to try and debunk demonetisation.

Now it seems that @yuvadesh, the official handle of the Indian Youth Congress’s online magazine, has decided to give the party handle a run for its money when it comes to generating controversies.

Earlier this evening the twitter handle decided to tweet a meme which involved PM Modi, Donald Trump and Theresa May as the central characters:

As seen above PM Modi is seen complaining against the “May Mays” which the opposition was making against him. Trump was thus seen enlightening Modi about the correct pronunciation of “meme”, Theresa then very condescendingly asked Modi to go and sell tea.

This meme by the youth congress magazine reeked of an elitist mindset of congress’s youth magazine where a humble and respected profession of a tea seller is considered menial and “classless”. It also showed the youth magazine’s contempt against individuals with a modest upbringing who as per its viewpoint were beneath those enjoying an unearned privileged lifestyle.

As a result, people, were shocked at the party magazine’s conduct and decided to react:

BJP leaders too wasted no time in attacking the party:

Soon the twitter handle seems to have realised the negative impact of its tweet and decided to delete it. Senior leaders of the congress party too rapidly got into damage control mode:

Also this isn’t the only time such an elitism has been displayed by those associated with the Congress party. In 2014 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar too had made a comment that:

I promise you in 21st Century Narendra Modi will never become the Prime Minister of the country. …But if he wants to distribute tea here, we will find a place for him

This was believed to have ticked off many voters who felt that it exposed the anti-poor side of the Congress party. Perhaps the party leaders have now learnt the lesson and ahead of the crucial Gujarat polls, chose to rapidly distance the party from the antics of its youth magazine.
