People react after Bombay HC prevents prosecution of Ashok Chavan in Adarsh scam case

On Thursday many were shocked, when it was reported that all the accused in the 2G spectrum scam were acquitted by a special court citing prosecution’s failure to prove its charges. The case and its facts though might still continue to spur public debate in the coming days as sinister details keep emerging in the matter.

Barely 24 hours have elapsed since the 2G verdict, and the judiciary has probably managed to provide another shock to the general public.

It has been reported that The Bombay High Court set aside Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao’s sanction which granted the CBI rights to prosecute the former Maharashtra CM in the Adarsh Housing scam.

As per the High Court bench, while asking for the sanction, the CBI had claimed that it had fresh evidence in its possession against Mr Chavan, but it failed to present any fresh material which was capable of being converted into evidence.

The bench also observed that, “The sanctioning authority is an independent body that can’t allow itself to be influenced by anyone’s opinion”.

Such a continuity of ‘unexpected’ judgements seems to have taken a toll on the general public who reacted with a variety of emotions including incredulity:

After two significant judgements regarding major scams have gone in favour of the accused, it remains to be seen what happen in Lalu Prasad Yadav’s case, when his verdict in the fodder scam is announced by a special CBI court on Saturday.
