In his speech at the Congress Plenary session, Rahul Gandhi has admitted that the previous Congress government had ‘let down’ the people of the country. The admission appears to be an effort towards damage control as the Congress Party has lost all credibility in the eyes of the voters due to the corruption of the previous government. It is also a little amusing that while Rahul Gandhi admits that the Congress government let the people of India down, his comrades continue to sing praises about how the Congress government ensured India reaches great heights.

The Congress President also stated that “BJP is the voice of an organisation, while Congress is the voice of the nation.” However, the fate of the Congress Party in the recently concluded Assembly elections in the North-East as well as in other states across the country appears to suggest otherwise.
Rahul Gandhi also made a reference to the Mahabharata and claimed that the Congress Party are like the Pandavas and the Bharatiya Janata Party are the Kauravas. The allusion to Mahabharata is in concordance with the recent efforts towards an image makeover by the Congress President which involves a lot of Temple visits, one of which led to a controversy that has raised a serious question surrounding his faith. Also, the apparent respect for the Mahabharata comes across as a little confusing as recently the Congress Party had suggested that the Ramayana is ‘fiction’.
The Congress Party is in a jubilant mood in recent times despite losing deposits in both seats in the recent by-polls in Uttar Pradesh. The party sees BJP’s defeats in two by-polls as evidence that Narendra Modi’s popularity is decreasing despite the BJP’s victory in almost all Assembly elections in recent times.
