Policeman arrested for participating in dalit protests

A Madhya Pradesh policeman has been arrested on charges of him being in cahoots with protesters during violent Dalit agitation during the Bharat Bandh which took place on 2 April. The already suspended constable named Vinit Maurya, posted at Harijan Police Station in Morena, Madhya Pradesh was arrested from his residence on Sunday evening. He was later sent to jail on court orders.

As per Government Railway Police’s (GRP) station-in-charge Haricharan Lal, a video went viral on social media where the policeman was seen along with the protesters.

Local reports have claimed that the police constable was responsible for uprooting a railway track during the agitation, following which he was suspended on Friday. Since his suspension, he went incognito. It has been claimed that the Railways suffered a loss of about Rs 2 crore as a result of these agitators. The report has also alleged that more than 100 government employees took part in the protests in Gwalior-Chambal region.

In the context of the constable, the report claimed that he assimilated with the protesters at 7:00 AM in the morning and by 9:30 AM he and others had managed to stop the Chattisgarh express. He and others also allegedly damaged the coach and engine of the said train. After indulging in such hooliganism till about 11:00 AM he left the venue and reported for duty.

Besides the policeman, the Madhya Pradesh authorities have also taken action against three government employees for participating in the said Bandh after taking an official leave. As reported, Ramprasad Shankhwar and Babu Singh Dulawat – two assistant teachers and Ravindra Kathuria a health department employee have been suspended.

Madhya Pradesh was amongst one of the most badly affected regions during the 2 April violent protests which resulted in the deaths of at least four people in Gwalior and Morena. The means of protest also included an agitator firing gunshots in Gwalior.
