‘Triple Talaq bill is in favour of Muslim women’, woman who filed petition against husband for giving triple talaq

Farahnaaz Khan, a woman living in Mumbai, has lodged a domestic violence case against her husband who had allegedly given her triple talaq over WhatsApp over demand for dowry.

Saying that Muslim women must understand how the bill is in their favour, Khan said she will file a petition against her husband in Bombay High Court for contempt of Supreme Court order on Triple Talaq. Recently, the Lok Sabha has passed the Triple Talaq Bill which criminalises Triple Talaq. In August last year, the Supreme Court of India delivered a historic verdict declaring Talaq-e-biddat or ‘instant triple talaq’ unconstitutional i.e. the act of pronouncing divorce by a Muslim man by saying (or even electronically sending on messaging platforms) the term ‘talaq’ three times in a go, will no longer be a valid form of divorce in the eyes of law.

Following the verdict, various politicians like TMC’s leaders and Congress’ Salman Khurshid defended triple talaq. Even lyricist Javed Akhtar displayed his hypocrisy on triple talaq. In fact, Supreme Court lawyer Karuna Nandy even defended triple talaq by dubbing it ‘free speech’.

An Islamic association named Raza Academy has filed a complaint against a TV show named ‘Ishq Subhan Allah’ which sought to highlight the triple talaq issue in a mature manner while taking into account the SC verdict. The academy has sought a ban on the show as it is depicting Islam in a ‘wrongful manner’. It felt that the visual media can affect children badly and claims that the programme “shows Islam in a bad light, the scripts of the entire serial are made to understand that Islam religion needs a lot of changes, revival, amendments”
