ISIS flags found hoisted in Assam’s Goalpara area

At least six ISIS(Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) flags have been found unfurled in Assam in the Goalpara area near the bank of Brahmaputra. According to reports, the flags were hoisted by unidentified persons near the Goalpara police outpost.

The flags reportedly had IS NE printed on them. The flags were found hoisted near the old court building near the police outpost and were first spotted by morning walkers. This incident has come in the wake of many recent news reports about local youth joining the Islamist terror outfit. Locals in the area are reportedly concerned about increased Islamist activities in the state. Last month, news of an Assamese youth joining terrorist group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen had surfaced. The terrorist’s mother had declared that her son should be shot dead.

Growing ISIS activities in the country have had the security agencies concerned. In Kerala, NIA has been investigating many cases of ISIS recruitment and people going to Syria to join the terror organisation. In several areas, especially in Kasargod and Kannur districts, radical Islamist activities have risen over the years. In March this year, a woman named Yasmeen Mohammad Zahid was sentenced by a court for recruiting and trafficking people for ISIS.

The NIA suspects that about 100 people from Kerala have joined the dreaded terror organisation. NIA has also been trying to bust their indoctrination, funding and conversion activities. The agency has stated that targetting local women and converting them in the pretext of marriage (love jihad) has been plaguing the state in the recent times.

Recently Gujarat ATS had filed a charge sheet alleging that two suspected terror activists who were arrested last year were planning attacks on Jews in Ahmedabad and Mumbai. ATS had alleged that the duo was in touch with ISIS and was receiving instructions to carry out the attacks.
