Yogi Adityanath government approves introduction of NCERT books in Madarsas

The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has approved the introduction of NCERT books in Madarsas. According to reports, a state cabinet led by CM Yogi Adityanath has approved the introduction and the books will now be available in Hindi, English and Urdu for the students studying in Madarsas.

According to reports, subjects like science, mathematics and computers will now be introduced in the Madarsas curriculum.

A report in News18.com stated that the Arbi-Farsi-Urdu Madarsa Board, in its May 15 meeting had suggested that all Madarsas should teach English and Hindi along with Urdu. The government spokesperson reportedly stated that the cabinet has approved the suggestion of the board. The new NCERT books will enable the students of Madarsas to learn Mathematics, science and computers besides their usual religious courses.

It is notable here that The National Council of Education Research and Training is the national level publisher of school books and the books are used by CBSE board schools. Many competitive examinations like the JEE and NEET also follow the NCERT syllabus.

The UP government had, last year proposed the introduction of NCERT books to the Madarsa board with an objective of bringing the students of Madarsa at par with mainstream educational standards. The UP government had enacted a 40 member committee with members from NCERT, Aligarh Muslim University, Lucknow University, principals of secondary and higher secondary schools and even research scholars from the Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Urdu Arbi and Farsi university to discuss the introduction of non-language subjects based on NCERT curriculum.

The move is aimed at modernising the education in Madarsas. The UP government had also launched a Madarsa portal to provide transparency in employment, infrastructure and educational details of the several hundred madarsas operating in the state.
