Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday reiterated the government’s stand on illegal Rohingya migrants and asserted that “Rohingyans have come from Burma and will have to return.” Furthermore, he stated that an appropriate advisory has been issued to state governments asking them to identify Rohingyas living in the state and to ensure that they are not able to procure documents which would help them to stake claim to Indian citizenship in the future.

Rajnath Singh also stated that after illegal Rohingya migrants have been identified, the Ministry of External Affairs will take up the matter with the Myanmar government for their return to Burma. We had earlier reported on the advisory that was sent to state governments. The letter said that Rohingyas are a security threat and are involved in crime and anti-national activities. That some of them have managed to procure fraudulently Indian documents was also emphasized.
The NDA government has always taken a strong stance against Rohingyas, much to the chagrin of human rights activists. Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, had stated earlier that the Rohingyans are illegal immigrants and must be deported. A Bangladeshi newspaper had also reported that the Indian government had deported 18 Rohingyas despite ‘SC stay’.
Rohingyas have been arrested in the past for their alleged involvement in human trafficking. In January, the Police had arrested three people, including a Rohingya, in connection with dacoities in Kerala. There has also been a suspicion that there is a deliberate attempt to Islamicize Hindu-majority Jammu by the settlement of Rohingyas. Rohingyas have also committed massacres of scores of Hindu men, women and children as confirmed by Amnesty. Despite the obvious security threat that Rohingyans pose, ’eminent’ personalities have been demanding that they are allowed to stay in India.
