Zee News commits major goof up while reporting about the upcoming football World Cup

With the FIFA football world cup in Russia fast approaching, the Indian media has also started to provide coverage for the highly popular tournament. One of the outfits covering the tournament included Zee News, which ended up committing a major goof up in the process.

On Monday evening Zee News carried a story titled, “Brazilian legend Cristiano Ronaldo to feature in World Cup opening ceremony” and also shared it on social media:

Incidentally, besides calling Cristiano Ronaldo as a “Brazilian legend” and tagging him in the tweet, Zee had also used his picture as a featured image for their post.

This obviously was a clear mistake on Zee News part as Cristiano who is a Portuguese national, represents his home country and not Brazil in International FIFA tournaments.

The Ronaldo which Zee News should have referred to is actually the legendary Brazilian striker, “Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima” who is going to take part in the opening ceremony along with singers Robbie Williams and Aida Garifullina:

Incidentally, the content of the Zee News article was sourced from an IANS feed which appears to have carried an accurate headline, leading to the question as to what prompted Zee News to supposedly change the headline to an inaccurate one:

This goof up was indeed noticed by various Twitter users who mocked Zee News for it:

It is indeed surprising to note that despite being made aware about their mistake, Zee News has neither corrected its mistake nor has it issued a clarification regarding the matter.
