Beaten, confined and starved by husband, Triple Talaq victim dies under treatment

Raziya, a victim of triple-talaq who was allegedly beaten and starved by her husband for over a month, had died on her way to a Lucknow hospital yesterday. According to reports, Raziya had been hospitalised in a district for many days but breathed her last on Monday.

According to reports, Raziya, a resident of Bareilly in UP, had married one Naeem in 2005. She has a 6-year-old son too. She was reportedly being abused and beaten by her husband regularly. Over two months ago, Naeem had given Triple talaq to Raziya over the phone from Delhi. When Raziya did not leave even after Triple talaq, Naeem allegedly had got aggressive and had beaten her mercilessly. Raziya had been confined in a room by Naeem for nearly a month without food.

According to reports, when Raziya’s family members arrived at Naeem’s house to rescue her, her condition had deteriorated severely and she resembled a skeleton and was even unable to speak. Raziya was admitted to the district hospital and was being treated there for nearly a month. She had been referred to a hospital to Lucknow and reportedly died while being taken there.

An NGO named Mera Haq, headed by Farhat Naqvi was reportedly helping Razia out for her treatment. Razia had reportedly stated that even her son Anas was being starved by Naeem and his family members. Ms Naqvi has reportedly stated that Naeem had married before and he had tortured his first wife too.

The central government had passed a bill criminalising Triple talaq recently. Even after criminalisation of the instant talaq practice, there are numerous instanced being reported where women are being given triple-talaq on a whim. A woman in Bareily was given triple talaq for demanding her daughter to be admitted to a school.
