WCD Minister orders immediate inspection of all child care homes run by Missionaries of Charity

Maneka Gandhi the Women and Child development minister has ordered the immediate inspection of all the child care homes which are runs by the organisation Missionaries of Charity, PTI has reported. This is said to be a result of Gandhi taking cognisance of the allegations illegal adoptions and child trafficking allegations against the organisation.

As per the report, the states have also been directed to ensure that all the child care institutions have proper registrations and linked to the nation’s adoption body. This is mandatory as per the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 – which states that Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA).

A Times of India report has stated that some orphanages have resisted this mandatory registration, which resulted in a Supreme Court petition by the disgruntled, which was eventually dismissed in 2017. Such a resistance has also meant that compliance has been low with about 4000 child care institutions yet to register out of 7300.

The report claims that even those 2300 institutions which have linked themselves to CARA have not brought their children under the adoption system. It has been estimated that these child care homes have about 2.32 lakh children.

Such a scrutiny against the Mother Teresa founded child care home comes days after a nun confessed on camera about selling a baby for Rs 1.2 lakh.

It has been reported that four babies were said to be missing from the Missionaries of Charity home in Ranchi which resulted in the arrest of two nuns. Since then the four kids have been rescued by the police, with the authorities claiming that three were sold and one was given away by the child care home.
