Delhi Metro will join elite league of metro networks having span of over 300 kilometres

The opening of 17.86 km long section of Pink Line metro between Shiv Vihar and Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake will put Delhi Metro in the elite league of rail and metro networks around the globe with the operational length of over 300 km, say reports.

DMRC recently has initiated various big projects to ease out the commuter’s rush. Especially the opening of Magenta line (Botanical Garden – Janakpuri West) and Pink line (Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar) have helped to reduce the crowd on the trains. For more relief to commuters, DMRC will add another 200 coaches, turning the six-coach trains to eight-coach one.

“With this, the Delhi Metro will cross the 300-km mark, and join the league of the top metro systems around the world, which have already done so, like metros in London, Beijing, Shanghai, New York,” Said Anuj Dayal, Executive Director, Corporate Communications at DMRC.

He also said that the Delhi Metro will expand to 314 km with 229 stations after the inauguration of the new segment of Pink Line.

The new Shiv Vihar – Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake section of Pink Line is scheduled to be flagged off for normal operations on Oct 31 by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia and Minister of States (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep Singh Puri.

The Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus and Lajpat Nagar section was the last corridor opened by DMRC, which is 8.1 km long and extended the span of the metro line to 296 km. DMRC has opened over 80 km of new corridors this year, and the opening of Delhi Metro’s Phase-III, including the Lajpat Nagar-Mayur-Pocket 1 is expected by the end of 2018. With the total addition of 80 km this year, Delhi Metro will become the world’s 4th largest network.

According to the report, the list of construction feats achieved by DMRC has multiplied this year. It recorded the construction of the second highest structure in the metro network, crossing over the height of 21 m at the existing Karkardooma (Blue Line). The highest metro rail structure, at a height of 23.6 m lies between Mayapuri and South Campus, is in the Dhaula Kuan area.
