Prime Minister Modi inaugurates ‘National Police Memorial’ to honour sacrifices made by police personnel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day, dedicated the National Police Memorial (NPM) to the nation in recognition of the sacrifice made by police personnel since Independence.

The Police Commemoration Day is observed every year on October 21 in memory of the policemen killed at Hot Springs in Ladakh by Chinese troops on this date in 1959. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju and senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani were also present at the event chaired by the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister in an emotional speech hailed the contributions and sacrifices of police personnel of the country and added that it is due to their alertness that the elements which create unrest are unsuccessful in their attempts. He credited the police personnel for foiling the attempts to incite fear and insecurity in the country and thanked them for securing peace in the country.

“It is the day to remember every jawan who maintains law and order in Jammu & Kashmir and fights against terrorism. Jawans on duty in Naxal-affected areas are doing a great service. It’s also due to them that the number of Naxal affected districts are going down and youth is coming to the mainstream,” PM Modi said.

According to the reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly built ‘National Police Memorial (NPM)’ which has been erected on 6.12 acres of land in Chanakyapuri, at the northern end of Shanti Path. This memorial represents all State and Central Police Organizations of the country.

The central sculpture of the memorial is built on a 30 feet monolith made of a single piece of granite, weighing 238 tonnes. The Wall of Valour has the names engraved of all 34,844 Bravehearts who have laid down their lives since 1947.

PM Modi also questioned the inability of previous governments and the Congress party to build such a memorial to honour the valour of the police personnel. “Why did this memorial take 70 years of independence to come? If the previous government wanted to build, it would have already been done so before its foundation stone got covered in dust”, PM lashed out at Congress.

Prime Minister Modi added that apart from police personnel and paramilitary forces, the disaster management personnel are not often remembered for their service and he dedicated the Police commemoration day to the disaster relief forces as well.

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Police Museum depicting history, uniforms, artefacts and gear of central and state reserve police forces. The museum, an underground facility is a first of its kind which is located below the police memorial and contains artefacts and points of time that shaped the history of the Indian police.
