Delhi High Court rejects Sajjan Kumar’s plea seeking more time to surrender

He had sought a 30-days extension to 'settle his children and grandchildren'.

Delhi High Court today rejected the plea of 1984 anti-Sikh riots convict and former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar seeking more time to surrender. The court said that it had no ground for granting an extension of time to Sajjan Kumar to surrender.

The former Congress leader had filed a plea on December 20 seeking more time to surrender till January 30 since he needed time to settle his children and grandchildren. He said in his plea that he is in a state of shock at present and believes that he is innocent. He further said that he wanted to approach the Supreme Court through a Senior lawyer and since the Apex Court in on vacation, most senior lawyers are on holiday.

The court had on December 17 convicted Sajjan Kumar for torching five members of a Sikh family in West Delhi’s Raj Nagar Part- I and burning down a Gurudwara in Raj Nagar Part-II, reversing the acquittal order of a lower court. Sajjan was awarded life sentence till the remainder of his life and the court had ordered him to surrender by Dec 31.
