CBI files chargesheet against Nalini Chidambaram in the Saradha chit fund scam

Nalini Chidambaram is accused of taking ₹1.4 crore from Saradha group

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against Nalini Chidambaram, wife of former union minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram, in the Saradha scam. The chargesheet was filed in a Kolkata court in the infamous chit fund case.

According to the charges filed by CBI, Nalini Chidambarm had received ₹1.4 crore from Sudipta Sen, the prime accused in the case. CBI says that Nalini Chidambaram conspired with Sudipta Sen with an intention of cheating and misappropriation of funds. She took the amount of ₹1.4 crore between 2010 to 2014, according to the chargesheet.

Sen was the chairman and managing director of the Saradha group of companies. The Kolkata based group ran a Ponzi scheme and collected around ₹3,000 crore from lakhs of investors, before the scheme collapsed the company was unable to pay back the investment, which had caused the scam to be exposed.

According to CBI, Sen had paid Mrs Chidambaram to manage probes by various against him.

The West Bengal government had formed a SIT in 2013 to probe the case, which was transferred to CBI by the Supreme Court. Sudipto Sen was arrested in 2013 and he is still in custody.
