One Muslim youth in Bagpat district of Uttar Pradesh has relinquished his religion and got converted to Hinduism on Wednesday. The man performed the requisite rituals at a Shiva Temple before embracing Hinduism. After the rituals, he became Sandeep from Shehzad. The man claimed that he had to take this step to avoid persistent pestering from his in-laws. His in-laws used to call him a blot on the name of Islam.

This man, now Sandeep, is a doctor by profession in Tarroda village. 8 years ago he was married to a girl named Shabana. But within a few months of marriage, she went back to her parents’ house. She had alleged that Shehzad (Sandeep) was a non-practising Muslim and didn’t offer timely namaz.

Whenever he went to meet her, he was stigmatized in the name of being a Muslim by his in-laws for being a non-practising Muslim. They called him a blot on Islam for not offering namaz. The continuous badgering from his in-laws family had a disastrous effect and Sandeep started drifting into depression. Once he even had contemplated committing suicide. Finally, to end his misery, he decided to leave Islam and accept Hinduism.

The incessant nagging from the in-laws left Shehzad with a very few options. He thought that religious conversion from Islam to some other religion will unshackle him from devoutly carrying out religious activities as well as stop his in-laws from enforcing him to follow Islamic doctrinal instructions.

On Wednesday, with some villagers, Shehzad embraced Hinduism after worshipping in Shiva temple and changed his name to Sandeep. The local police were informed of the voluntary conversion. The police have acknowledged Shehzad’s conversion and have declared that conversion didn’t occur under duress.
