Saradha scam: CBI continue to grill Kolkata Police chief, former TMC MP Kunal Ghosh to be questioned today

Kunal Ghosh, who was the CEO of Saradha Media, an arm of the Saradha Group allegedly involved in a multi-crore chit fund scam had accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of being the biggest beneficiary of Saradha scam.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continued the questioning of Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar for the second day on Sunday. In addition to Rajeev Kumar, the CBI has also summoned former TMC MP Kunal Ghosh to appear in person at the CBI office in Shillong for interrogation in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam.

According to the reports, the CBI is likely to question Kunal Ghosh regarding his 91-page letter detailing the role of Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar in handling the ponzi scam probe after the main accused, Sudipta Sen and Debjani Mukherjee, both promoters of Saradha scam had fled to Kashmir.

Kunal Ghosh, who was the CEO of Saradha Media, an arm of the Saradha Group allegedly involved in a multi-crore chit fund scam had accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of being the biggest beneficiary of Saradha scam.

The CBI had grilled the Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar on Saturday following the orders of the Supreme Court which had directed Rajeev Kumar before the CBI officials in connection with to question him regarding multi-crore Saradha scam.

Reportedly, three senior CBI officers had questioned Rajeev Kumar for nearly nine hours on Saturday for his alleged role in the tampering of crucial evidence in the scam. He was also questioned on his role in concealing the evidence in a heavily guarded CBI office. Rajeev Kumar led the special investigation team (SIT) formed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to investigation the chit fund scam before the probe was handed over to the CBI by the apex court.

Rajeev Kumar’s role is under the CBI’s scanner for deliberately withholding some crucial and incriminating documents that the SIT had collected in the chit fund scams probe. The Central Bureau of Investigation had also expressed fear over the destruction of evidence after the Kolkata police had taken charge of all evidence and seized all documents. The BJP had alleged that these documents point fingers at various TMC leaders and people close to Mamata Banerjee.

Interim CBI Chief M Nageshwar Rao said that a lot of evidence is being destroyed or being caused to disappear. Earlier, too, the CBI had claimed that the West Bengal government was obstructing investigation in Saradha Chit Fund scam. It has alleged that the “hostile” government is delaying the filing of the final charge sheet.

The state of West Bengal was amidst massive chaos last week after the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had resorted to ‘dharna’ politics to allegedly save herself from Saradha chit fund scam investigation. Mamata Banerjee had sat on ‘Dharna’ after Kolkata Police had forcefully detained eight CBI officials who had gone to visit police commissioner Rajeev Kumar to obtain crucial information regarding the Saradha scam.
