Two people have been arrested by West Bengal police in the murder case of Trinamool Congress Party’s leader and MLA from Krishnaganj Constituency of Nadia district Satyjit Biswas. The leader was attending Saraswati Puja function in Phulbari, where he was shot point-blank by unknown assailants, who immediately fled the scene leaving the murder weapon at the spot. An FIR has been lodged and the Officer-In-Charge (OC) has been suspended.

Biswas, after being shot at, was rushed to the nearest Shaktinagar district hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The murder has started a political slugfest between the TMC and Bhartiya Janta Party state leaders. TMC is continuously alleging BJP for pre-mediating the murder to make electoral inroads in the state.

“It is the handiwork of Mukul Roy. He is touring these days across the area to strengthen the BJP. He had earlier lashed out at Satyajit. We will fight it.” Gauri Shankar Dutta, TMC’s Nadia district president was quoted. An FIR lodged in the case, also names Mukul Roy. Mukul Roy was one of the founding members of TMC but had defected to BJP in 2017.

Dutta also claimed that the deceased leader was popular amongst the Scheduled Caste Matua Community, and was convincing the community to not vote for BJP. He also connected it to PM Modi’s recent rally at Thakurganj town, which had seen a large gathering of people from the Matua community, pointing towards growing support for the party.

BJP has vehemently rejected the charges and instead hit back at the incumbent CM Mamta government, for the deteriorating law and order of the state.

“This is extremely unfortunate, he was a known leader. Even in Joynagar, we have seen MLA was attacked and had a narrow escape recently. Every time they name BJP and later it comes out to be their factional feud.” BJP State President Dilip Ghosh was quoted by Indian Express. He also alleged TMC of harbouring anti-social elements and demanded a CBI probe in the case.
