‘Hundreds of students broke into my house, kept my wife confined for hours’, alleges JNU Vice-Chancellor

Delhi Police has said that protesters were prevented from entering the VC's house by security personnel

Vice-chancellor of JNU Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar has alleged that several hundred students from the university broke into his official residence in the university campus and kept his wife confined in the house for several hours.

The VC of JNU informed that he was away in a meeting at that time and his wife was alone in the house. He said she was terrorised by the students. “Is it the way to protest”, he asked on Twitter.

Delhi police confirmed that students had organised a march to the residence of Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar today but denied that the protesters entered the house. They claimed that the students did try to enter the house but they were stopped by the security staff. Delhi police also claimed that after this, most students went back to their hostels, but a few of them were still there. Police said that the situation is under control now.

Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, who is also the Professor of Electrical Engineering in IIT Delhi, is facing opposition from students and teachers of JNU for his reform measures. He has introduced measures like minimum attendance, biometric attendance for teachers, which have been proved to be very unpopular in the university.

In a tweet later today, JNU VC Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar said that while the students’ behaviour last night is condemnable, neither he nor his wife wants to file a police complaint. “We have forgiven them,” he tweeted.
