Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh accepts Sidhu’s resignation, says ‘should have worked instead of shunning responsibilities

Sidhu was divested of his local government bodies portfolio and asked to be the minister for power and renewable energy. He had not taken up the post.

Accepting the resignation of the controversial Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh criticised the former Local Government bodies Minister stating that he should have ‘assumed the portfolio given to him instead of shunning work’.

Punjab CM slammed Sidhu for leaving Congress in the lurch at a crucial time. The Chief Minister forwarded the resignation to Governor Punjab VP Singh Badnore for formal acceptance. “The minister should have assumed the portfolio handed to him in the middle of a critical paddy season instead of shunning work,” CM Amarinder Singh said while accepting Sidhu’s resignation.

On July 15, CM Singh had stated that the power and renewable energies is a very important portfolio for a state like Punjab and every day they receive queries regarding the ministry and its works.

Sidhu was divested of the Local Government portfolio following a miserable performance by Congress party in the Lok Sabha 2019 elections. Citing ‘inept handling’ of the portfolio assigned to him, Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh had shifted Sidhu from Local Government to Power Ministry. However, Sidhu had hit back saying he was being unfairly ‘singled out publicly’ despite him being a performer throughout.

Sidhu had since then not assumed the charge of Power Ministry and had recently tendered his resignation, sending his resignation to the already resigned party president Rahul Gandhi. Captain Amarinder Singh had now accepted Sidhu’s resignation at a time when crucial files have gone missing from the records of the Local Government ministry which was earlier headed by Sidhu.

Things went sour between Captain Amarinder Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu when despite Captain’s advise Navjot Singh Sidhu had visited Pakistan on Pakistan PM Imran Khan’s invite for the Kartarpur groundbreaking ceremony. The ever-increasing rift between the Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu and Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh widened further after Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur asserted that Captain denied her Lok sabha ticket to fight elections. Singh had then refuted the allegations claiming she was offered to fight elections from Bhatinda or Amritsar but it was her personal decision to not fight from both the seats.
