JeM attack threats: Reports of possible terror attacks being planned against PM Modi, NSA Doval and Air Force bases in J and K

PM Modi and NSA Ajit Doval

Terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammad is readying a special squad of attackers to target PM Modi and NSA Ajit Doval, a Times of India report has said citing sources within the intelligence agencies. As per the report, a major in the Pakistani army, associated with ISI, is collaborating with the terrorists for the ‘sensational attacks’.

The input regarding this plan was conveyed to Indian intelligence agencies by a foreign intelligence unit, which had intercepted a communication between Pakistan-based JeM terrorist Shamsher Wani and his handler. The TOI report had stated that they have accessed the input, which was a handwritten note passed to Wani. The communication spoke about a large scale attack in September.

Acting on the input and related reports, the Indian authorities have issued an alert to the police forces in 30 different ‘sensitive’ cities, including Jammu, Amritsar, Gandhinagar, Pathankot, Jaipur, Kanpur and Lucknow.

As per latest reports, intelligence agencies have also issued an alert about a module of 8-10 terrorists planning to target key air force bases in suicide attacks. Following the threat, air force bases at Srinagar, Hindon, Pathankot, Jammu and Awantipora have been put on an ‘orange level’ alert.

Security agencies have also reportedly carried out a review of the security cover provided to NSA Ajit Doval. Doval, who is under Z-plus security cover has been under constant threat, especially after his highly publicised role in carrying out the cross-border surgical strike post-Uri attacks and the airstrikes in Balakot that was carried out by the Indian air force in February this year.

The report states that JeM has been rattled after the Balakot strikes and the relentless elimination of its terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir by the Indian security forces. After the massive losses and humiliation it suffered when Indian fighter jets bombed its premises at Jabba top near Balakot earlier this year, the terror organisation has been seething in anger and looking for an opportunity to attack India.

Following India’s move abrogate Article 370 and make Jammu and Kashmir an Union Territory has further pushed terrorist organisations into a corner and they have been looking for a ‘dramatic retaliation’ to assert their power by targeting high-value leaders, according to the report.

It has been reported earlier that JeM and other terrorist organisations have been building up presence along the LoC. On September 12-13, a major infiltration bid by JeM cadre, assisted by Pakistan army’s BAT, was foiled by Indian security forces. Recently, COAS Bipin Rawat had informed media that the Balakot terror camps have been reactivated by Pakistan.
