The National Commission for Women on Thursday received a complaint from YSR Congress MLA from Tadikonda, Vundavalli Sridevi after a group of people had allegedly made casteist and sexist remarks against her during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Ananthavuram village, Andhra Pradesh.

According to the reports, the NCW taking the cognisance of the complaint has expressed serious concern over discrimination based on gender and caste. The NCW also registered a case against unidentified people from Ananthavuram village. The commission has decided to take up the matter with police officials and sought a report from DGP Andhra Pradesh.

On September 3, YSR Congress MLA Vundavalli Sridevi had alleged that casteist remarks and hurtful comments were used against her by some TDP leaders when she attempted to visit a Ganesh Puja pandal. The TDP leaders had allegedly stated that Lord Ganesha will become ‘impure’ if Sridevi, a Dalit woman, touches the Lord. The statements allegedly made by TDP leaders, especially against a woman Dalit MLA had received severe condemnation.

“If they can say such things against an elected MLA, what would they do to a common man?,” had asked Sridevi while demanding strict action against the TDP leaders who made such comments.
