Maharashtra Assembly elections 2019: Clashes erupt between the workers of AIMIM and NCP in Aurangabad

Following the clash, AIMIM workers staged a protest outside the residence of Qadeer Maulana.

An ugly brawl broke out between the workers of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) at Kat Kat Gate area of Aurangabad following the polls on Monday. The police had to resort to baton-charge to bring the situation under control.

According to the police, clashes sparked off after the polling concluded in the region. “After voting drew to a close, a clash erupted between workers of two parties. The situation is under control,” said police official.

Nasir Siddiqui is AIMIM candidate in Aurangabad Central whereas the NCP has fielded Abdul Qadeer Maulana. A minor scuffle between their supporters soon descended into a major clash as AIMIM leader Imtiyaz Jaleel who tried to intervene to settle the brawl received minor injuries from the belligerent NCP supporters. Following the clash, AIMIM workers staged a protest outside the residence of Qadeer Maulana.

“I had gone there to talk to my party workers when they were attacked(by the NCP workers). We have asked the police to inspect the CCTV footage and take appropriate action,” said AIMIM leader Imtiyaz Jaleel.

BJP had fielded its candidates on 150 of the 288 member Vidhan Sabha while its alliance partner Shiv Sena is contesting on 124 constituencies. The remaining seats are left for smaller allies. The NCP, on the other hand, had joined hands with Congress in their bid to displace saffron dominance from Maharashtra. Counting of the votes is scheduled to happen on October 24.
