West Bengal Congress leader Sanmoy Bandyopadhyay, who was granted bail after being arrested for alleged violation of Cyber Crime Act, has alleged that he was subjected to inhumane torture while in police custody. As per reports, he has claimed that he was not allowed to drink a single drop of water for over 14 hours despite his repeated requests. “I asked for water so many times, I could see they were all drinking water, but I was not given a single drop to drink for 14 hours,” he said.
Bandyopadhyay has alleged that he was subjected to such torture on orders of ‘aunt and nephew’, a reference to TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee. The journalist-turned-politician posts regular videos on his YouTube channel which are critical of the Mamata Banerjee government. “Why should they use police to torture me? I don’t know whether such things happened in the regime of Hitler or Mussolini,” he said.
Sanmoy Bandyopadhyay was arrested from his residence in Sodepur, North 24 Parganas on Thursday, October 17 was granted bail on Sunday, October 20. A Purulia court granted him bail on condition that he will appear before the investigating officer at Purulia police station once a week. He was arrested on allegations of forgery, defamation and intent to provoke breach of peace after he criticised the ‘aunt and nephew’ in his social media posts.
