Jharkhand: Law student abducted and gang-raped at gunpoint in Ranchi, 12 arrested men confess to the crime

A car, bike, two magazines, bullets, pistol, 8 mobile phones and victim's damaged phone were recovered from the accused.

In yet another shocking incident, a 25-year-old law student was abducted and raped by 12 men at gunpoint at a brick kiln near Ranchi. According to reports, all 12 men have been arrested and they have confessed to their crime.

The FIR lodged by the victim at Kanke police station states that the incident happened at around 5.30 pm on November 26. The victim was chatting with her friend near a bus stop in Sangrampur area, in the city outskirts, when two motorcycle-borne men accosted them and abducted the victim at gunpoint after overpowering her friend, police said.

The place from where the victim was abducted, is barely 4km from her law college campus and 10 km from the chief minister’s official residence. The high-security zone also houses the residences of the DGP, chief justice of the Jharkhand high court and the leader of the opposition. The new police lines are also close to the area.

After the bike reportedly ran out of fuel, the two motorcycle-borne men made calls to their friends asking them to come with a car. They then drove to the brick kiln and took turns to rape the woman.

The victim managed to reach the police station the next morning and narrated her ordeal to the police after which an FIR was lodged. Based on the complaint the police conducted raids and arrested the 12 accused identified as Sunil Munda, Kuldeep Oraon, Sunil Oraon, Sandeep Tirkey, Ajay Munda, Rajan Oraon, Naveen Oraon, Aman Oraon, Basant Kachhap, Ravi Oraon, Rohit Oraon and Rishi Oraon. On being interrogated the accused confessed to their crime.

“They were booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code, SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Arms Act. A car, a motorcycle, a pistol, eight mobile phones and the cellphone snatched from the victim have been seized from the possession of the accused,” a police statement added.

A car, bike, two magazines, bullets, pistol, 8 mobile phones and victim’s damaged phone were recovered from the accused.

Shockingly, this is the third such incident which has been reported in the last three days, second being reported from Kolkata while the third from Hyderabad. Prior to this, we reported how two minor girls were abducted by three teenage boys from outside Kalighat temple in Kolkata and raped thereafter.

In another spine chilling incident, a 27-year-old veterinarian Dr Potula Priyanka Reddy was brutally raped, murdered and set ablaze in the outskirts of Hyderabad city on Wednesday night. The Telangana police have now confirmed that Priyanka Reddy was kidnapped and gang-raped. Four people have been reportedly arrested in connection with the case. They have been identified as Mohammad Pasha, Naveen, Kesavulu, and Siva.

“So these are the kind of issues people will have to debate and discuss. I don't know what the conclusion would be at the end of the day but when we talk about redistributing wealth, we are talking about new policies and new programs that are in the interest of the people and not in the interest of super-rich only,” he added.
