Pakistani channel insults Sikhs by showing them dancing like jokers for opening of Kartarpur Corridor

The program presents a caricature of Sikhs which is insulting for the community.

Weeks after the Kartapur Sahib Corridor was formally opened by India and Pakistan, a Pakistani channel has created controversy by insulting Sikhs. A skit by Geo News Urdu shows actors dressed as Sikhs celebrating the opening of Kartarpur corridor, but the way it has been executed humiliates the Sikh people and Sikh religion.

The program on the channel begins by the anchor introducing several men and women dressed as Sikhs, one of them trying to mimic Navjot Sing Sidhu. The channel shows Sikhs as jokers dancing Bhangra on the set, which is supposed to be the Kartarpur corridor, to express their happiness on the opening of the corridor. One of the fake Sikhs wearing a red turban has been presented as an eccentric person who attempts to flirt with the female anchor and even tries to hug her. The program presents a caricature of Sikhs which is insulting for the community.

The skit has not gone well with Sikhs who criticised it, asking not to humiliate the community. One person named Rajinder Puri wrote, “Don’t try to present Sikh community as joker please, you won’t find any baptized Sikh dancing like you guys presented in this video. All Sikhs living abroad don’t like this video.” Tarnjit Walia said, “We would not do Bhangra in or near gurudawaras. Aisha we do waheguru jaap.”

Akali Dal MLA from Delhi Manjinder S Sirsa objected to the video, saying Anti-Sikh Propaganda in Pakistan continues. He said that the skit shows Sikhs as cartoons which greatly hurts sentiments of Sikhs. He urged Pakistan PM Imran Khan to order the withdrawal of such skit and take action against such agenda-setters.
