Delhi’s AAP MLA Naresh Balyan has faced a setback ahead of Delhi elections as a Delhi court rejected his bail plea on Wednesday. Balyan was arrested in a Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) case linked to gangster Kapila Sangwan alias Nandu.
Special judge Kaveri Baweja of the of Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi pronounced “Application dismissed”. The court had reserved the order after concluding the hearing on 9 January.
The police have accused Balyan of being a “facilitator” in the organised crime syndicate. It is alleged that he collaborated with gangster Kapila Sangwan and was involved in multiple extortion cases.
The AAP MLA from Uttam Nagar came under scanner after an audio of a phone call between him and Sangwan emerged. While he was earlier arrested in an extortion case, he was granted bail by the court. But after that, he was arrested again under MCOCA on 4 December. He is in judicial custody since then.
In the meanwhile, Balyan has also sought permission to sign documents required to file nomination for Delhi Assembly election and also to open a bank account. The court issued a notice to the Delhi police on this request.
