A traditional Jallikattu or bull run event organised on the occasion of Pongal has turned tragic in the Avaniyapuram festival in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. One farmer has been gored to death by a raging bull while dozens of other persons have sustained injuries.
A 22-year-old man named Naveen Kumar suffered deep gashing wounds on his chest and torso after a bull gored him inside the Jallikattu arena. He was rushed to the government Rajaji Hospital, but was declared brought dead.
Naveen’s family members reportedly refused to receive his body and demanded a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs and a job for a family member from the Tamil Nadu government.
CM Stalin has expressed sorrow at the incident.
A total of 75 persons have suffered injuries in the Jallikattu event. The injured include 25 bull owners, 34 bull tamers, 14 spectators and 2 organisational staff members at the arena. A total of 836 bulls were released in 11 rounds in the particular arena, as reported by Times of India.
