‘Unmarried women are no different from prostitutes’: Fugitive Islamic preacher Zakir Naik in Pakistan seen telling in viral video

Zakir Naik, the fugitive Islamic preacher wanted in India on terrorism-related charges is on a tour in Pakistan, delivering sermons to large gatherings of Muslims. Many of his statements are now viral online and even some Pakistanis are finding them to be too hateful.

In one of those videos, the Islamic preacher is seen saying that an unmarried woman is no different from a prostitute. Naik says that every unmarried woman should find a husband to marry as soon as possible and even when she doesn’t find an unmarried man, she should consider marrying a married man who already has a wife (or wives).

He then proceeds to say that becoming the second or third wife of a married man is a much better option for an unmarried woman than becoming a ‘bazaari aurat’ (prostitute). He then says that people often tell him that prostitute is a harsh term but he tells them that it is the best term he can use for a woman who is unmarried, because unmarried women are ‘public property’.

Though some Pakistanis are shocked by the statement, many are welcoming the statement, adding that the preacher is absolutely right in calling unmarried women prostitutes. One Abdul Rehman shared that the women who don’t get married soon eventually have to become the second or third wife of a married man, or they become ‘prostitutes’ by starting affairs and indulging in adultery.
