On Indira’s death anniversary, don’t fall for this lie about Vajpayee

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Today is the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, best known for the 19 month long Emergency declared by her. Of course, like previous years, media houses have started circulating the fiction where former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had referred to Indira Gandhi as “Durga”.

The headline says that the Opposition, referring to former Prime Minister Vajpayee, referred to Indira first as a doll and then as goddess Durga. This is absolutely incorrect.

Listen to Vajpayee himself vehemently deny referring to Indira as Durga.

Even ABP News in its 10 facts about Indira, repeated this fake news.

This is not the first time media houses have spread lies about former Prime Minister Vajpayee. Earlier, The Hindu had also spread lies about Vajpayee.

Many others, too, kept referring to Indira as goddess Durga.

While many Twitter users called out the media houses for spreading this fake news, the fact that it comes up periodically shows how lies spread faster than truth.

They say repeat a lie a thousand times and it becomes the truth. Vajpayee referring to Gandhi as Durga is one such lie.
