The Election Commission had recommended to disqualify 20 AAP MLAs, originally 21, but one Jarnail Singh had resigned from MLA to contest elections in Punjab, on the charges of office of profit. The recommendation was sent to the President, who on Sunday approved of the same, thereby disqualifying 20 MLAs. The AAP MLAs were appointed parliamentary secretaries and their appointment was described as them holding offices of profit by Patel.

This matter has earlier claimed big names such as Jaya Bachchan and even Congress President Sonia Gandhi. While Bachchan lost her Rajya Sabha seat via disqualification, Sonia Gandhi had to resign from all her posts which could have been considered as falling under “office of profit”.

Arvind Kejriwal though tried another method, by passing a bill which had retrospective impact, trying to bless his 21 MLAs with legal sanctity. Unfortunately the bill was rejected by Pranab Mukherjee, the then President of India and ever since a new saga of victimhood has played out. Kejriwal has cried foul that Modi is behind all the happenings.

Meanwhile, Arvind Kejriwal has attacked Centre for disqualification of his 20 MLAs and accused of ‘harassment’. Among those disqualified are Alka Lamba, who spreads fake surveys and likes to delay rescue operations by climbing fire brigade in her free time. Another MLA facing the axe is Naresh Yadav, who had allegedly desecrated Quran during the run up to the Punjab election.
