Modi walks the talk on VVIP racism, PM convoy moves without affecting traffic

The  union cabinet took a decision to end VIP culture in the country on April 19 2017. This decision made red beacons history as it withdrew special privileges to all public servants. The rule 108 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, which deals with beacons had enabled the use of these devices that sought to differentiate between the high and mighty from common people. The decision had implemented a Supreme court order of December 2013 to reduce use of red beacons.

The new rules had come into effect from May 1, 2017.  After May 1, beacons were allowed only on vehicles concerned with emergency and relief services (ambulance and fire service).
