Students of Kerala engineering college who were misled to eat beef cutlet demand principal’s resignation

Students of  Kerala’s Cochin University College of Engineering Kuttanad (CUCEK)  who were misled to eat beef cutlets in the name of ‘red cutlets’ have demanded the resignation of the principal of their college. They have expressed their anger as their religious sentiments had been hurt because of this deceit by the college authorities.

The students who were mostly from outside the state had been served the beef cutlet as a vegetarian dish at a seminar held on January 25. The outsiders had realised that the dish was non- vegetarian after taking a bite. Later their Malayali peers had informed them that it was a beef dish. The students protested outside the  vice chancellor’s house as per media reports.

There have been contradicting stories on this episode. Two students have told NDTV different narrative of the incident. NDTV reported as below

One of the students who ate snacks at the seminar told NDTV, “I asked them twice. They said it was vegetarian food. After having a byte, I realised it was non-vegetarian stuff. Later, some Malayali friends told me that it was beef. I am worried but unable to tell my family about it.”

“There was some misunderstanding that day. There were both veg and non-veg snacks. They first didn’t ask what it was. Then they asked the person who was serving veg snacks. Only later did they ask us and ours was beef cutlets. We told them so. If it’s such a big deal, they should ensure that they check what they eat,” Abdul Basith, a student who was present at the seminar told NDTV.

The principal Dr Sunil Kumar has denied allegations. He has been accused of feeding beef to his students to satisfy his ego. Investigation into the incident might reveal the role of principal and authorities in this controversial incident.
