On Saturday, after over 2 decades of Communist rule, the BJP had a historical win in Tripura. At Belonia town in Tripura, stood a statue of Russian communist leader Vladimir Lenin, who served as head of Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1924. Within 48 hours of the verdict in Tripura, BJP workers and supporters thronged the centre of College Square and brought down the Lenin statue that stood there for the past 5 years, chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai.

Last year in August, the elected government in Ukraine removed 1,320 statues of Lenin from every town and village, in an attempt to get rid of all Soviet-era symbols. In fact, a street named Lenin Street was renamed to Lennon Street, as a tribute to the Beatles. In 1991, two days after Ethiopia’s ruthless dictator, Mengistu Haile Mariam, fled in a plane, Lenin giant statue was brought down. Meanwhile, India still has statues of Lenin in Kolkata, Vijaywada and Delhi.
The statue will be removed by police and given to municipality for storage. Meanwhile, the driver of the bulldozer, Ashish Pal, has been arrested and let off on bail.
