A criminal complaint has been filed against senior Congress leaders, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saifuddin Soz, for allegedly making ‘seditious statements against the Army’ at the Delhi’s Patiala House Court by lawyer Shashi Bhushan. Azad is the current Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha while Soz is a former Union Minister.

Bhushan has accused the two senior Congress leaders of “making seditious statement in order to incite disaffection in the mind of the people against Indian Army and Government of India”. His plea seeks action against Azad under Sections 124 (sedition), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 505 (1) (spreading rumour about army/navy/air force official which is likely to cause mutiny) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) claiming that his comment painting the Army as killer of innocents “nothing less than waging war against the country”.
In a recent interview, Ghulam Nabi Azad is alleged to have said that the Army kills more civilians than terrorists. “They (forces) take action against four terrorists and kill 20 civilians. Their action is more against civilians than terrorists. For instance, they killed 13 civilians in Pulwama and just one terrorist,” Azad was quoted as saying. Soon after, Soz had stoked a controversy by asserting that Musharraf was correct in his assessment that Kashmir wishes for independence. “Musharraf said Kashmiris don’t want to merge with Pakistan, their first choice is independence. The statement was true then and remains true now also. I say the same, but I know that it is not possible,” he told news agency ANI.
