‘Quit BJP in 15 days or die’ : Muslim BJP MLA from Assam receives threat letter with bullets

BJP Assam MLA Aminul Haque Laskar

Aminul Haque Laskar, the lone Muslim MLA for the BJP in Assam, has received a threat letter wherein he is asked to quit the BJP if he wants to stay alive, New Indian Express has reported. Laskar is a MLA from southern Assam’s Sonai constituency.

Going by the report, the letter along with two live bullets was received by the MLA on Saturday via India Post. As per a Hindustan Times report, these bullet are believed to be of a .32 pistol. The three page letter written in red ink was supposedly sent by an organisation named, “Save Secure and Development Protection Force of Muslim, Barak Valley Zone”.

Written in Bengali, the letter criticises Laksar for being associated with the BJP and RSS, despite being a Muslim. It also claimed that the MLA is responsible for convincing Muslim youths to join the BJP and even speaking up against his own community.

Following this, the letter expressed anger at Laskar supporting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 – which aims at legalising persecuted illegal migrants belonging to Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism and Christianity.

Irked by Laskar’s support to the bill, the letter warns that his building can be destroyed within two minutes and he won’t survive, despite all the security around him. The letter thus demanded that Laskar quit the BJP within 15 days if he wished to stay alive.

As per a NeNow report, the threat letter was signed by a man named “Haidar Hussain Khan” who claimed to be the vice-president of the said organisation. Following the receiptal of the letter, the MLA filed a complaint at the Silchar Sadar police station.

The MLA while speaking to the media claimed that his security had been reviewed following the threats, and a total of four security guards would protect him. Besides this, he claimed that more CCTV cameras will be installed at his home.
