Owing to a land dispute with her family in Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal, a tribal woman was brutally raped and reportedly later brutalised with an iron rod on Saturday night. She has been admitted to the Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital and is in a critical state, according to police reports.

The accused, a relative, has been arrested by the police and is now being interrogated.

The incident is being associated with the Nirbhaya rape case of 2012, wherein the victim was gang-raped and brutalised by six men inside a moving bus. She then died due to her injuries in a hospital in Singapore, 13 days after the incident took place.

The accused from the Jalpaiguri district had allegedly called the woman to a nearby pond in Niranjan Pat area, where the victim lived, using the excuse of discussing an ongoing land dispute. She was then brutally raped by him and abused with a rod, according to officials.

The victim, who is in her thirties, was alone at her home on the date of the incident. The main accused is reportedly her nephew and the families had an ongoing land dispute. The woman has stated to the police that the nephew was had a companion but he did not rape her.

According to recent reports, an auto-rickshaw driver found the victim’s body and took her home. She was admitted in the Dhupgiri hospital but was later shifted to Jalpaiguri Sadar hospital.

The police are still investigating the matter and are now questioning the suspects.
