In a huge breakthrough for the security agencies in the poll-bound Chhattisgarh state, 61 Naxals carrying 51 country-made weapons have surrendered before the Bastar IG Vivekanand Sinha and Narayanpur SP Jitendra Shukla today.

Impressed by the programs being run by the Community Police, these 62 Naxalites decided to surrender and made an appeal to their fellow Naxalites to join the mainstream society. All the Maoists surrendered by reaching out to IG Vivekanand Sinha of Bastar Range.
After surrendering, the Maoists said that they have lost precious time of their life but now they want to be a part of the society. One of the 62 surrendered Naxalites took the opportunity to make an appeal to his associates to join the mainstream of the society and shun Naxalism. The Naxalites had surrendered with them 51 loaded guns.
The surrendered Naxalites belong to the Tumaradi Janata Government under the Maoist-controlled Maoist organization’s Kutul Area Committee and have been active since last 8-9 years. During their surrender, several top officials of the district including IG Vivekanand Sinha, SP Jitendra Shukla, and others were present.
The IG Vivekanand Sinha said that all the surrendered Naxalites will get the benefit of the rehabilitation policy of the government. He also said that those who are willing to move in the positive direction are welcome.
Chhattisgarh is one of the states ravaged with the chronic menace of Naxalism. In last days there have been several cases of Naxal attacks on the CRPF personnel. A few days back, Naxals attacked a patrolling vehicle killing 2 CRPF personnel and a Doordarshan TV cameraman. Before that, they violently attacked the Bastar area’s BJP leader Nandlal Mudami in his house. The Naxals had also tried to blow up a bullet-proof bunker vehicle in which 4 CRPF soldiers were martyred and 2 others were grievously injured.
From the last couple of months, the Naxals have shown increased buoyancy in carrying out their nefarious activities. They had installed posters in the Bastar and Kanker region of Chhattisgarh and warned the locals against participating in the upcoming elections.
Chhattisgarh is slated to go to polls in two phases- the Naxal-infested regions will go to polls on November 12 while the remaining constituencies will go to polls on November 20. With elections just a week away, this is a shot in the arm for the law enforcement agencies authorized with the responsibility of carrying out election process in the Naxal-affected region.
