Cleaning of river Ganga got a major boost when the engineers in Kanpur finally got rid of waste from Sissamau Nalla, diverting it to Jajamau sewage treatment plant. The drain was reputed to be Asia’s largest and is about 128 years old. The completion of this project marks is expected to have a profound impact on the Namami Gange project.

Earlier, 14 crores liters of sewage was being emptied in the Ganga, but recently 8 crore liters of sewage was being sent back to the STP. However, it was a herculean task for the engineers to stop the remaining 6 crore liters of sewage from getting drained in Ganga because the velocity of the drain was similar to a canal. The JNNURM’s Dotted Pipeline along with the British era Dot Nala are on the same route. This had made it difficult to pump sewage water to the STP 9.5 kilometers away from the slopes. This was one of the most important projects under Namami Gange initiative.
Last Month, Ganga was salvaged from sewage from two other drains around Kanpur. The water department had started sending waste from Mure mills and Nawabganj drain to Jajamau plant for treatment. This has prevented the release of about 2.25 crore litres of toxic waste into Ganga. In addition, a nearby sewage drain Dabka Nallah which used to excrete 30 lakh liters of waste in Ganga was closed. The Jajamau treatment plant purges the waste fluids and releases the purified water into Ganga.
The CM of Uttarakhand, Trivendra Singh Rawat on Tuesday examined Namami Gange projects in a meeting held in the secretariat. The officials apprised him of the details of the projects going on to cleanse the river Ganga. He claimed, 15 projects out of the 32 projects on the banks of the river Ganga have been completed. Officials informed him that the work in the remaining 16 projects is underway and tendering process is initiated in the remaining one. According to them, the work on the 3.65Km sewer line on Arihant Vihar, Vishnu Garden and Kankhal is under progress.
The National Mission for Clean Ganga is the implementation wing of National Ganga Council which was set up in October 2016 with an aim to clean Ganga and its tributaries in a comprehensive manner.
Namami Ganga, a flagship programme was sanctioned by the Modi government in June 2014 with a budget outlay of ₹20,000 crore to accomplish the twin objectives of effective reduction of pollution, conservation, and rejuvenation of the Ganga. Sewage Treatment Infrastructure, River-Front Development, River-Surface Cleaning, Bio-Diversity, and Industrial Effluent Monitoring are some of the areas on which Namami Ganga initiatives are based.
