1984 anti-Sikh genocide witness, Cham Kaur had to return disappointed from Patiala House Court Delhi after the hearing was adjourned due non-appearance of Sajjan Kumar’s counsel. Kaur’s son and father were killed by a mob during the 1984 riots. This the second case Sajjan Kumar relating to the 1984 riots filed by the CBI on the recommendation of Nanavati Commission.
Kaur appeared in the court to testify against Sajjan Kumar regarding his role in the 1984 riots. She had told the court on 16th November, “On October 31, 1984, we were watching the TV coverage of the death of Indira Gandhi. On November 1, 1984 when I stepped out to look for my goat, I saw accused Sajjan Kumar addressing the crowd and was saying ‘hamari ma maar di, Sardaro ko maar do‘ (Sikhs killed our mother, kill them)”. The next morning her son and father were pulled out of the house and thrown off the roof. “My son Kapoor Singh and my father Sardarji Singh were pulled out of the hiding place on the second floor, beaten badly and were thrown down from the roof,” Kaur added.
Kaur who was face to face with Sajjan Kumar in the court identified him as an accused in the riots before the court. Sajjan Kumar was also identified by another prosecution witness Sheela Kaur as one who instigated the mob in Sulatnpuri. The case was earlier being heard in the Karkardooma court and was later transferred to the Patiala House Court by the Delhi High Court which also directed to District Judge to video record the proceedings at the cost of the accused.
Sajjan Kumar was convicted by Delhi High Court on Monday in another case related to the killing of five members of a family.
