The failure of the Congress-JDS coalition government in Karnataka to waive-off farm loans has resulted in another death of a farmer and this time it is in the Mandya district of Old Mysore region.
According to News9, Rajesh, a 42-year-old debt-ridden farmer has committed suicide after consuming pesticide at his farm in Basavalingangodi village of Maddur taluk, Mandya.
Rajesh, who owns 6 acres of land, was growing paddy, silk, and sugarcane. Recently, he had experienced a crop failure and had severely affected him financially, reported Vijaya Karnataka. Rajesh had obtained a loan of Rs.8 lakh from SBI and another Rs.1.5 lakh from VSNB bank for pursuing agricultural activities.
This is the second farmer suicide in a matter of a few days in the state of Karnataka. A 56-year old farmer named Hampanna Hoogar belonging to the district Bagalkot had committed suicide after being unable to repay his debt.
The Congress party led by Rahul Gandhi who claims to have waived off farm loans in Karnataka has been exposed yet again after series of farmer suicides occurring in the state due to the failure of state government to waive-off these farm loans. Several farmers have also been issued notices after they failed to repay farm loans taken in various banks.
Recently, it was reported that Karnataka state government itself had admitted that Rs 44,000 crore loan waiver had helped only 800 farmers in the state. They had confirmed that only a few of the farmers had benefited from the so-called ‘loan-waiver’.
