It’s been only a few days since carcasses of cows were recovered in Bulandsheher leading to violence that claimed the lives of a police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh as well as a youth named Sumit. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had ordered a thorough investigation and had issued directions for strict actions against those involved in the alleged cow slaughter.
After the Bulandsheher incident, a campaign was started by the police against cow smugglers in the entire State. In a major success under the campaign, the police caught 10 people slaughtering cows inside a closed house in Puranpur, Pilbhit as reported by Jagran. The police also seized 500 kgs of cow meat from the house along with knives and axes being used in slaughtering. Cases have been registered against all accused.
On Thursday, SI Keshav Kumar Tiwari reportedly received information that cows are being slaughtered and meat being sold in the house of one Haseeb, resident of Ahmednagar locality in Puranpur. The Police reached the spot immediately and caught the people slaughtering cows. The other accused have been identified as Shabbir Ahmed, Haneef, Basheer Ahmed, Rahees Ahmed, Mohammad Miyaan, Rafeeq, Akram, Habeeb, Babbu and Mohammad Islam. The police are on the lookout for the absconding suspects.
Upon interrogation, the arrested culprits revealed that they had escaped the two previous raids conducted by the police on August 22 in Mohalla Linepaar Sahukara and on Nov 6 in a house belonging to one Nafees Ahmed. All the accused caught by the police have admitted to having been involved in these previous two incidents as well.
It is ironical that the incident happened in the constituency of Union Minister Maneka Gandhi who is known to be a fierce animal rights activist. Maneka Gandhi was also appointed the Chairwoman of the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) in 1995. She had also started an organisation called People for Animals in 1992.
