The seven Kashmiri students who are accused of raising anti-India slogans on JNU campus on 9th February 2016 had in their confessional statement claimed that they did not know Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya. This was part of the charge sheet filed on Monday. However, as reported by DNA, the police investigation has revealed that not only they knew each other but the event was also being planned for a long time.
As per the report, Muneed and Mujeeb, who are brothers, had confessed they knew each other. But others had claimed they joined the event after they got to know about it from social media. Aqueeb, one of the accused had told the police that no one had invited him and he didn’t know the organisers and had even covered his face to protect himself from the cold. However, as per police, Aqueeb’s call records show that on the day prior to the event, he had called Umar Khalid. On 9th February, too, his mobile phone location shows that he was in JNU. Investigation has also revealed that Aqueeb was seen holding an ‘Azaadi’ placard and was present at the event along with Umar, Anirban, Umair, Rayees and Basharat.
Similarly, while Mujeeb had claimed that he was not invited, his call records show he had called up Umar Khalid on his mobile on 28th December 2015, little over a month before the event. As per the charge sheet, Mujeeb was found raising slogans glorifying stone-pelters.
Umar Gul, another Kashmiri student, had also claimed that he went to JNU after he saw the event on Facebook, but his call records also show that he was in constant touch with Mujeeb who had even called him at 12:15 pm on 7th December, 2 days before the event. The charge sheet also states that CFSL experts have certified that Umar Khalid forged the signatures of Ashwathi and Anirban on the permission letter.
As reported by IndiaToday, Delhi Police has enough evidence to prove that Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were the ‘main conspirators’ who had organised the protest. As per reports, the police have recovered an email in which Umar Khalid and Anirban are seen talking about “Azaadi (freedom) of Kashmir” from “India’s occupation”.
Recently, the Delhi Police filed a charge sheet in the JNU case to the Patiala House Court. The charge sheet filed by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police against Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and others on the celebration of terrorist Afzal Guru’s death anniversary at Jawaharlal Nehru University in February 2016. Shehla Rashid and daughter of CPI leader D Raja also are mentioned in the charge sheet. The charge sheet states that the JNU event was part of a planned conspiracy.
