An FIR has been registered against Basim Hilal, a Kashmiri student from Aligarh Muslim University, for an objectionable social media post on the Pulwama Terror Attack. He has been suspended by the University as well.

Omar Saleem Peerzada, from the Public Relations Office of AMU, has stated, “We’ve come to know of the highly objectionable tweet. Taking immediate cognizance, he has been suspended by AMU administration. We won’t let the University be discredited. We’ve zero tolerance. He hails from Kashmir and was a B.Sc. Mathematics student.”

Hilal wrote “high on JAISH (e Mohammad)” after the terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack. The tweet is no longer available as his account has by withheld after the tweet. He has been booked under sections 153A (promoting enmity between two different religions) and 67 (for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act.
In another incident, Macleods Pharmaceutical Ltd has issued a show cause notice to one of its employees for a similar reason. As per one social media user, the company asked its employee Riyaz Ahmad Wani, to offer a written explanation within 7 days as to why he should not be terminated for posting an “antinational message” on Facebook. He has also been suspended with immediate effect as per the letter circulating on social media.

Similar disciplinary actions have also been reported by Dev Bhoomi Institute of Technology and Ras Bihari Bose Subharti University against their students for similar social media posts. Social media users are pointing out similar comments glorifying the terror attack made by many other people, and therefore more such disciplinary action may be taken by respective organisations against such persons.
Earlier, NDTV too had suspended its Deputy News Editor for two weeks for a post that seemed to glorify the terrorist attack. The organisation had also hinted at possible further action.
