BJP youth wing leader Priyanka Sharma, who was arrested and taken into 14-day custody by the West Bengal Police after she posted a meme on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has refused to apologise for the meme. She said that if someone should be arrested, it should be Mamata Banerjee because of the language that she uses for the Prime Minister. Priyanka was released today from jail after the Supreme Court had granted her bail yesterday.

Addressing a press conference at BJP Office, she said that she did not do anything wrong therefore she would not apologise. Sharma was kept in custody for 18 hours by the West Bengal police despite the Supreme Court order to release her with immediate effect yesterday. She was released in the morning today but before that, she was forced to sign an apology declaring that she would not post such content in future. Initially, the Supreme Court had said that she could be granted bail if she apologises for posting the meme, but had later modified the order saying she should be released without any condition, but had ordered her to apologise after her release.

“My bail was granted yesterday but still I was not released for another 18 hours. They did not allow me to meet my Advocate and family. They made me sign an apology”, said Sharma. Sharma was released from jail today after a Bench of Justice Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna warned of issuing a contempt notice to the officials involved. A closure report was filed by the West Bengal government in the trial court yesterday itself, but the Supreme Court was not informed about that yesterday by the Counsel for West Bengal.
The court will hear the Sharma’s plea seeking action against the West Bengal police in the first week of July.
