The Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh has given its permission to slap sedition charges on 44 persons accused of inciting violence in Chingravati area of Bulandshahr which claimed lives of two people, including that of one police personnel. A bloodthirsty mob had run riot in the region after locals had discovered carcasses of cows in the area.
According to the officials investigating the case, they had successfully secured the approval from the administration for slapping sedition charges under section 124-A of the Indian Penal Code against the 44 accused in the Syana violence. “On February 19th this year, we had officially sent a request asking for approval for placing sedition charges against the accused. Today, we have got the letter of approval and we have submitted it in the court,” officer involved in the investigation said.
On December 3rd last year, violence broke out in Bulandshahr after carcasses of cows were found in a field in Mahav village near Chingravati, Bulandshahr. Protesters had gathered outside a police station claiming that they had discovered carcasses of cows in their locality. Angered with police inaction even after repeated complaints, they clashed with the police. The protest turned violent where the police inspector Subodh Singh accidentally shot Sumit, a 17-year-old boy. Inspector Singh too died after he was shot at by the mob.
