Prime Minister Narendra Modi today took to Twitter to salute those who fought fearlessly and resisted the Emergency which was imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. On its 44th anniversary, PM Modi said there was no bigger threat to democracy than the Emergency.

PM Modi said, “The atrocities carried out during the Emergency were the biggest threat. But even then the country did not bow down. 25th June 1975 was one such dark night which no one who believes in democracy could forget. No Indian could forget. In a way the country was converted into prison. Opposition voice was stifled. Leaders like Jay Prakash Narayan and others were jailed and even the judiciary was clouded by the Emergency.”
He said that people should talk about Emergency as its awareness is essential. Speaking about the Emergency is a constant reminder on why democracy is important, he said.
Meanwhile, Opposition leaders like TMC Supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to say that while the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi may be the darkest chapter, the last five years have been ‘Super Emergency’.
