Bhima Koregaon case accused Varavara Rao arrested by police in connection with a 2005 Maoist attack

Karnataka police took Bhima Horegao Case accused Varavara Rao into custody today in connection with a 2005 case registered at Tirumani. He was already in judicial custody at Yerwada jail in relation to the Bhima Koregaon case.

A team of Karnataka police reached Pune after obtaining production warrant of Rao from a local court and took him into custody today morning. He will be produced before a court in Karnataka.

On February 10, 2005, a Maoist attack in Pavagada under Thirumani police station jurisdiction had claimed the lives of six Karnataka State Reserve Police Force, a cook, and a civilian. A case under sections 302 and 307 and sections of UAPA and Explosives Act was registered at Thirumani Police Station in Pavaguda in Karnataka’s Tumkur.

As per the information provided by the police, Rao’s name had emerged as the main conspirator in this Maoist attack. However, he was not arrested so far. The Karnataka police had moved the High Court challenging the acquittal order of the accused who were tried and acquitted in the case in 2016.

Rao was arrested by the Pune police in connection with the Bhima Koregaon Case on 17th November 2018, the day on which his house arrest extension granted by the Hyderabad High Court came to end.
