Andhra Pradesh: After outrage, YS Jaganmohan Reddy reinstates the award in name of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam

Following backlash over renaming of an award, the Andhra Pradesh government has now decided to immediately cancel the earlier government order to rename the ‘Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Pratibha Puraskar Awards’ in the memory of Andhra Pradesh CM Jaganmohan Reddy’s late father YS Rajashekhar Reddy.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy has directed to cancel his government’s earlier order and further ordered to reinstate the name of former President APJ Abdul Kalam for ‘Pratibha Puraskar Awards’.

Earlier on Monday, the Andhra Pradesh government led by YS Jaganmohan Reddy had decided to rename an award named after former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in the memory of Jaganmohan Reddy’s father YS Rajasekhara Reddy. It was reported that “Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Pratibha Puraskar Awards” was to be renamed as “YSR Vidya Puraskars” from this year onwards.

The awards, which are supposed to distributed to meritorious students in the state was decided to now be named after the Congress leader instead of former President APJ Abdul Kalam. The awards will be distributed on the occasion of National Education Day, the birth anniversary of India’s first education minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, on 11th November.
