Speaking at the Republic Summit, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated that the Supreme Court should not interfere in the matter of religious beliefs. Home Minister Shah also clarified that there is difference between the Ayodhya matter and the Sabarimala issue as the former one was a civil issue while Sabarimala issue concerns with the tradition.
Home Minister Amit Shah said that he still maintains that the Supreme Court should not interfere in the matter of religious beliefs. He added that that the Ayodhya dispute was on who owned the land and not that how the deity will be worshipped as in the case of Sabarimala.
“Sabarimala issue is related to cultural practices and traditions whereas the Ayodhya case was a purely civil dispute. The two issues should not be conflated. The courts should refrain from regulating the religious beliefs of the people. If the court is predisposed in giving a judgment in the Sabarimala matter, I hope their decisions on women entry in mosques and Parsi temples remain consistent with the Sabarimala verdict,” Amit Shah said.

Further sticking to his stance, Amit Shah stated while the Sabarimala case was being contested, the other petitions were not contested. He maintained that the Court should not interfere in any religion’s customs.
“Ayodhya’s case was about who will own the land and not on customs. The Ayodhya case is a purely civil issue. In Sabarimala, however, the matter is regarding the traditions of the temple and whether it should be changed or not. While there has been a lot of controversy over Sabarimala, there is also a petition seeking entry for women to offer namaz inside the mosque and also allow Parsi women inside the Aghyari. In all these matters my stance is the same. Let the verdict at least come from the Court,” he added.
